Biography of First Lieutenant James D. Madden

First Lieutenant James D. Madden, the adjutant of this Battalion, was first inducted into the Army, 5 March 1941 at Fort Dix, New Jersey.  He was only there for five days when he was sent to Pine Camp, New York as an enlisted man in the Medical Department.  He was assigned to the xray room of the Station Hospital, where he worked until he was placed in charge of that section.  In July 1942 he was sent to Fort Monmouth, New Jersey, to pursue the course for Officer Candidates.  Upon successful completion of this course, 16 October 1942, he was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Signal Corps, and ordered to Drew Field, Florida for further assignment to duty.

Headquarters Aircraft Warning Unit Training Center assigned him to the 564th Signal AW Battalion, where he performed Company duty until January 13, 1943.  During the period 13 January to 26 September 1943, he served as adjutant of the 564th Signal AW Battalion.  While holding this position he was promoted to First Lieutenant.  When initial assignment of personnel to the 591st Signal AW Battalion began, lt. Madden was assigned, and appointed Commanding Officer of Headquarters Company, and also Battalion Adjutant.
